How to clean lamb shearling

Clothing, whether for men or women, in addition to the great ability to show the beauty of one's body and personality, often involves problems related to cleaning. Washing or simply cleaning a garment made of particular materials can be problematic as well as expensive. This is the case of lamb shearling, a garment that one is always afraid to put one's hands on so as not to ruin its colors and beauty. In the following lines we will try to understand how to clean shearling sheepskin, also analyzing some extreme cases.

How to clean lamb shearling

The first step to take before starting to clean a delicate sheepskin like shearling is to look at the label inside it. To many it may seem trivial, but the label provides very useful information on the composition of the materials and above all whether or not it can be cleaned and washed with liquids. Having read the label and what can be done on the materials, it is important to distinguish sheepskin by color. Sheepskin can be light or dark.

Light shearling

For the white color you can use a solution with a small spoonful of ammonia dissolved in a teaspoon of normal water or in the famous 3% hydrogen peroxide solution that everyone uses to quickly clean stains. While the ammonia is dissolving in the water it is essential to clean the shearling from dust, using a damp cloth to pass lightly over the affected surface. Once the cleaning process is finished use a damp sponge and wait for the liquid solution to dry completely. In addition to this cleaning method you can opt for an equally effective solution such as soda and milk. Dilute a spoonful of soda inside a glass containing warm milk. By dipping a swab inside the glass it is possible to transport the liquid onto the shearling to be cleaned and remove the dust residues. Yellow stains on shearling are certainly not a new thing, even just a drop of rain is enough to cause horrible yellow stains. In order to eliminate them, you can apply a solution of hydrogen peroxide (about a tablespoon) dissolved in 200 ml of natural water.

Dark shearling

For the coat of dark sheepskin, the cleaning methods are slightly different, this is because the dark color tends to immediately transform into alternative colors that are much more invasive aesthetically. The most recommended solution in this case is to mix 2 tablespoons of soda and 1 tablespoon of oxalic acid in a glass of water. After mixing the ingredients well, you can rub the solution produced on the affected surface with a sponge. Do not be afraid of the appearance of a small white stain, the chemical process is running, once dried this can be removed easily; a damp sponge will make the job much easier.

Alternative methods for cleaning lamb shearling

In addition to cleaning, you may need to wash a shearling sheepskin, but how to proceed? It is very important to understand that there are two different approaches: dry cleaning and wet washing.

Dry cleaning

To proceed with the cleaning and dry cleaning it is essential to place the shearling sheepskin horizontally before pouring salt on the dirty areas. By rubbing lightly with your hands and then using a rubber brush on the suede, the sheepskin will return to its original color almost magically.

Wet cleaning

As we have already anticipated in the previous lines, the best method for cleaning shearling sheepskin is through ammonia, a ratio of 1:4 (between ammonia and water) produces a more invasive but certainly effective and deep result.

Conclusions

Cleaning a shearling sheepskin may seem complicated, the delicacy of the materials could discourage those who care a lot about their garment. As we have seen, there are many methods for cleaning it, from the less invasive dry method to the more extreme wet method.
